Animals have been the subject of art since the brilliant, realistic and dynamic images of horses, bison, bears and other creatures were drawn on the walls of caves. Menagerie brings together over a dozen artists who have seen fit to include animal imagery in their art in either literal ways or as symbols, icons or metaphors. Featured Artists include Rachel Leibman, Kathryn Eddy, Florence Wint, Lawrence Cappiello, Neal Korn, Alessandra Exposito, Joe Chirchirillo, Pamela Guenther-Duffus, Ekaterina Kardonova, Marianne Fourie, Elissa Merkl, Janet Boltax, Sheri-Lynn Behr, Iris Kulfert-Rivo, Margaret Murphy, Jun' Ichiro Ishida and Paul Lachenauer. Admission: Free
(856) 256-4521

The Rowan University Gallery is pleased to present The Narrow Margin, a site-specific installation by Gelah Penn. In her fourth solo show, Penn continues to explore the linear language of drawing in three-dimensional space. As curator Elizabeth M. Grady has noted, "Penn's shimmering installations of knotted monofilament are the very essence of drawing, loosened from its dependence on the wall." The exhibition also includes sculpture and works from Penn's new "Blackfil" series, relief drawings in monofilament and acrylic paint on Yupo. Developed in response to issues explored in this and previous installations, these pieces engender a compelling dialogue with The Narrow Margin. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 24 from 5 to 7 PM and a gallery talk with the artist will be held at 4 PM the same afternoon.
The exhibition and opening reception are FREE to the general public.

This charming comic-drama by playwright Zina Camblin follows two African-American women through their lives as hairstylists. Camblin explains that "The play is not just about hair styles, it's about the culture, black women and our hair. You can't really separate those two things. The beauty salon is like therapy. You'd be surprised what people tell over the sound of a hair dryer. For a long time in the black community, going to a psychologist, a therapist, was something that black people didn't do. That's for white people. But the hair salon is where black people could talk about their lives, and kind of lay their hurtings down." Touching and funny, this National New Play Network World Premiere paints a lovely portrait of beauty and ambition.
